Retired Army Col. Douglas MacGregor believes Ukraine has already lost its war with Russia. But he thinks many Western leaders want to keep supporting Ukraine to accomplish their real goal of pulling the United States into a direct conflict with Russia.
“Ukraine has lost this war. I would argue it lost it some time ago,” said MacGregor during an appearance on Judge Andrew Napolitano’s podcast, “Judging Freedom.” (Related: Ukraine is running out of ammunition as Russia continues to overpower its military.)
“It’s now becoming so apparent that even the most ardent supporters of Ukraine’s war on Russia in London, Berlin, Paris and Washington can’t really stand up and say anything else. I suppose some will, but the truth is the war is over,” he continued.
MacGregor explained that Ukraine is experiencing widespread logistical failures and is losing a lot of ground in its eastern Donbas region, which Russia claims as being the rightful territory of the separatist Luhansk and Donetsk republics.
The Ukrainian military is also experiencing hundreds of casualties a day, perhaps as much as a thousand dead and wounded on days with really heavy fighting, said MacGregor.
“Their army is effectively annihilated,” he said. “They’re throwing reservists – the equivalent of what we would call National Guardsmen – into the buzzsaw.”
In comparison, MacGregor noted that the Russian advance has been very calm and methodical in dealing with any obstacles in its path.
“The Russians have already begun consolidating their control over 25 to 30 percent of Ukraine where the Ukrainian forces were previously paused to attack Russia,” he said.
“Ukraine is now a failed state. It’s collapsed,” MacGregor added. “People are being pushed at gunpoint into Russian fire. The whole thing is a disaster. But no one wants to admit failure because if they admit failure, they lose all credibility.”
Despite the clear fact that Ukraine is losing this war, President Joe Biden and his administration are still pushing through with their plans to send even more military hardware.
Biden recently announced that the U.S. would supply Ukraine with advanced rocket systems and munitions. In an interview with the Swiss German-language newspaper, Die Weltwoche, MacGregor said these missile systems won’t change the tide of the war.
“This ‘High Mobility Artillery Rocket System’ is a good system, but we are sending only four launchers,” he said. “This is about as significant as sending four tanks. You don’t have a significant impact with so few launchers.”
Furthermore, MacGregor noted that the Russian army has excellent military equipment capable of countering any advantage the Ukrainians might get from the American rocket systems.
“These four launchers are going to make absolutely no difference at all,” he said. “It looks like a face-saving venture by the U.S. government to create the illusion that we’ve done something important for Ukrainians when, in fact, we haven’t.”
In an opinion piece written for the American Conservative, MacGregor warned that, if Biden and his administration continue providing military aid to Kyiv without any significant opposition, the Ukrainian government could be plunged into a perpetual conflict with Russia.
“If the Biden administration has its way, Kyiv will continue to operate as a base for the buildup of new forces poised to threaten Moscow,” he wrote. “In practice, this means Kyiv must commit national suicide by exposing the Ukrainian heartland west of the Dnieper River to massive, devastating strikes by Russia’s long-range and rocket forces.”
