The scientists responsible for setting the “Doomsday Clock” have warned that the world is now just 90 seconds to midnight – the closest the planet has ever been to nuclear annihilation.
The Doomsday Clock, handled by the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit organization focused on global science and security issues, is a reflection of how close to total annihilation humanity is. It is adjusted every January, and the Science and Security Board just moved the clock 10 seconds forward to 90 seconds to midnight.
This means that the Science and Security Board believes the threat of nuclear war and other global catastrophes has significantly risen this year. (Related: AI predicts nuclear Armageddon with attacks on London, Moscow and Washington, DC.)
The Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents how close the humanity is to destroying the world with dangerous technologies. Set every year by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, it warns how many metaphorical “minutes to midnight” humanity has left.
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists pointed specifically to the ongoing Russian special military operation in Ukraine for the move of the Doomsday Clock closer to total global annihilation. Back in January 2022, when the clock was at 100 seconds to midnight, the organization had warned of rising tensions in the region and said the outbreak of violence between Russia and Ukraine could push the world closer to an apocalypse.
“Finding a path to serious peace negotiations could go a long way toward reducing the risk of escalation,” noted the scientists. “In this time of unprecedented global danger, concerted action is required and every second counts.”
The organization also claimed humanity faced threats from other ongoing issues, such as disruptive technologies, biological threats and so-called climate change.
Central to the movement of the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight is the United States’ role in making sure the conflict in Ukraine escalates and preventing any kind of peaceful resolution.
“If the U.S. really wants to avoid war with Russia, it must realize that, barring the use of nuclear weapons, Russia is not only determined to prevail, but it has the means to prevail,” wrote Ray McGovern, a former Central Intelligence Agency Russia analyst. McGovern wrote a scathing criticism of President Joe Biden’s administration for its hawkish policies against Russia, which, coupled with a refusal to open any kind of diplomatic channels, is what could lead to a nuclear apocalypse.
“What has gone on in Ukraine over the last nine years poses an existential threat to Russia. It will not tolerate an existential threat,” he wrote. “Biden and his sophomore advisers do not seem to ‘get it,’ and that makes it exceptionally dangerous.”
For its part, the Kremlin reacted to the Doomsday Clock’s movement by calling for a sober appraisal of the tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine situation.
“The situation as a whole is really alarming,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He added that there was no prospect of any kind of easing of hostility based on the policies pushed by the U.S. and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). “This imposes on us a duty to be particularly careful, to be alert and to take appropriate measures.”
Proving the Kremlin correct, U.S. officials have openly stated that they are strongly considering sending M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and other policymakers have also openly called for driving Russia out of the disputed territories of Ukraine altogether, despite warnings that Russian President Vladimir Putin could end up using nuclear weapons if he thinks the continued existence of Russia is at risk.
